Between January 2015 and April 2021, public social media posts were compiled from US patients with advanced breast cancer (BC) and their caregivers. This analysis encompassed geolocalized United States-based posts, gathered from publicly accessible online sources such as social media (Twitter) and forums (patient associations), all written in English. Posts that discussed chemotherapy or immunotherapy protocols were qualitatively examined by two researchers in order to identify and categorize associated perceptions; these were classified as positive, negative, mixed, or without a discernible perception.
A total of 80 posts, contributed by 69 patients, and 142 posts, contributed by 127 caregivers, discussing chemotherapy, were included in the analysis. These posts were culled from 39 accessible social media sites, each one a public platform. In the case of advanced breast cancer patients and their caregivers, chemotherapy was viewed more negatively (36%) than positively (7%). Graduate medical education programs employ milestones to assess trainees, reflecting the evolving expertise from novice to expert levels in a structured way. This research delved into the possible association between pediatric residency milestones and the subsequent initial performance in fellowship programs.
Descriptive statistics were employed in this retrospective cohort study to analyze the milestone scores of pediatric fellows who began their fellowship training between July 2017 and July 2020. Milestone scores were collected at the conclusion of the residency program (R), at the midpoint of the first fellowship year (F1), and at the year's end (F2).
A total of 3592 unique trainees are reflected in the data set. For each pediatric subspecialty, a consistent temporal pattern was observed: high composite R scores, much lower F1 scores, and slightly higher F2 scores. The Spearman correlation coefficient between R scores and F1 scores was positive (rho = 0.12) and statistically significant (p < 0.001), indicating a positive relationship. Through complementary and collaborative efforts at two distinct medical institutions, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the University of Maryland (UM), a series of clinical activities were conceived and executed within the pre-clerkship gross anatomy labs. These activities forged a direct connection between dissected anatomical structures and pertinent clinical procedures. During laboratory dissection sessions, these activities specifically task students with performing simulated clinically-related procedures on anatomic donors. OpNotes at VCU and Clinical Exercises at UM are the names for these activities. Within the VCU OpNotes framework, each scheduled laboratory session concludes with a fifteen-minute group activity segment. Student responses from this activity are collected via a web-based assessment form and evaluated by the faculty. UM Clinical Exercises' scheduled laboratory sessions include approximately 15 minutes of group activity per exercise, but faculty are not involved in grading these exercises.
The integration of OpNotes and Clinical Exercises infused anatomical dissections with clinical applications. Activities originating at UM in 2012 and subsequently at VCU in 2020, facilitated a multi-year, multi-institute development and testing of this ground-breaking methodology.
